Acrylics are a water-based medium that is superior to the traditional oil paint. Oils tend to fade, crack and yellow with age whereas acrylics are very durable. Acrylics have benefited from modern technology and it is very difficult to tell if a painting was done in acrylic or oil. Technically speaking, I have found so many advantages to the use of acrylics for portraits that I no longer use oils unless a client insists.
